sure start maternity grant

If you are waiting for your baby's arrival or you've just welcomed him into the world, you may already know about Sure Start Maternity Grant.

In case you don't, you have to know that it's a one off-payment of 500 pounds to financially help people with children in the UK. In fact, its purpose is to cover the costs of having a baby, like for example helping you pay for the child's pushchair, cot and, in general, the necessary equipment he might need once he leaves your comfortable womb. If you qualify, the money you'll receive will go straight into your bank account and you won't have to pay it back, which is a sweet deal, don't you think?

Find out if you are entitled to claim this grant by paying attention to the following lines.

Who's eligible for Sure Start Maternity Grant?

You are entitled to claim Sure Start Maternity Grant if you are expecting your first baby, or you already have children under 16 years old in your family and you now have multiples on the way (if they are twins, the amount remains the same, 500 pounds, but If you are about to have triplets, it increases to 1.000).

In addition, in order to qualify for the grant, you must already get one of the following benefits:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit at a rate higher than the family element
  • Working Tax Credit that refered to a disability or severe disability element
  • Universal Credit

And what about foster and surrogate parents?

Can you claim in such cases? Yes, but your baby must be less than one year old on the date you do it. Also, you need to meet one of the following requirements:

  • You've become responsible for the baby and you’re not the mother.
  • The baby has been placed with you for adoption.
  • You’ve got permission to adopt a baby from abroad.
  • You’ve got a parental order for a surrogate birth.
  • You’ve been appointed as guardian.
  • You have an adoption or a residence order.

When and where should I claim it?

There's a limited timing to apply. You can either do it within 11 weeks of expecting your little one or within three months after giving birth. In case you are adopting a child, you must do it within 3 months of him being placed with you.

If you want to claim it, you just have to fill out the Sure Start Maternity Grant form (SF100) that you'll find by visiting the UK government's site. Once you've done it, send the form to your nearest Jobcentre Plus. For further information and help, you can also call this telephone number: 0345 603 6967.

How does it combine with other benefits?

You'll be glad to know that the Sure Start Maternity Grant doesn't affect your other tax credits or benefits, since it's just a one-off payment.

Hopefully, after reading this post, you'll be able to get the Sure Start Maternity Grant. Having children is very exciting, we all know that, but it can also be financially challenging for those families who are on a low income. If you qualify, don't hesitate to apply for it, because any help after giving birth will be more than welcomed.
