So you decided to have a baby – There is plenty to think about! 

Before getting pregnant, it wouldn’t hurt to consider where your life is at this point. Are you ready? Are your career and your finances ready? Do you have a good support system? Once you have made an informed decision, it’s time to get your body ready to increase your chances of getting pregnant: get in shape with a healthy diet and an adequate weight and, of course, forget about bad habits such as smoking. The sooner you quit, the better!

At the same time, stop using birth control: Get advice on coming off the pill or go to the doctor to have your IUD removed. It’s easier if you are using barrier birth control methods such as the condom or the diaphragm, but still, a visit to the doctor to discuss conception is never a bad idea.


Tips for getting pregnant

Captain Mums’ top tip for getting pregnant is, of course, having a healthy sex life! Enjoy sex with your partner without worries and don’t think too much about conceiving a baby: Remember that stress is fertility’s main enemy whereas a healthy sex life is its best friend! You can choose to check which are the best sex positions to conceive a baby, use an ovulation kit or check your basal temperature – but having fun is a must!

There is a 5 days window in your menstrual cycle to conceive a baby, but don’t forget that irregularities can occur and keep trying outside that window as well. You can also keep track of your period – and have a pregnancy test ready to hope for the good news!

If getting pregnant is proving difficult, get some information about fertility treatments and alternative therapies. If it doesn’t happen, don’t lose hope on becoming a mum: you can always turn to fostering, adoption or surrogacy. Getting pregnant is not the only option.

Trying to get pregnant can be quite a stressful time, specially if it’s harder than expected – but don’t worry. Keep healthy and active, and soon you’ll be able to enjoy your pregnancy!
