tips for getting pregnant

How to get pregnant is probably not a secret for you. However, you can increase your chances with CaptainMums’ tips for getting pregnant!

Our tips for getting pregnant include some advise for a healthy life – which is incredibly important, since fertility is very related to lifestyle and general wellbeing. They also include the very basics – you know that you need to have sex in order to get pregnant, but are you aware of your fertile days? Do you know what the fertile window is? If you don’t, you will sure find these tips on getting pregnant useful!

Tips for getting pregnant: The basics

1. Have lots of sex

We will start with one of the key tips for getting pregnant: Sex! Approximately the 84% of the couples who have regular, unprotected sex manage to get pregnant within a year, so get on to it! Experts advise sex every two or three days to ensure success – but these are just the minimums. You can have sex as many times as you want! Don’t overdue it, though: having sex several times a day can make the quality of the sperm decrease.

2. Have lots of sex – and enjoy it!

Another of the very important tips for getting pregnant is enjoying sex when you have it. It is not uncommon for the future mummy and daddy to obsess over their chances – however, stress is one of fertility’s worst enemies. Don’t schedule sex like another one of your daily tasks: find time for it, but remember that sex’s only purpose isn’t reproduction, and enjoy it as much as you can. You can also check which are the best sex positions to conceive a baby

3. Get to know your menstrual cycle

Once you decide to have a baby, it is recommended that you get to know your body and how it works. Do you keep track of your menstrual cycle? From now on, it’s important that you do. In order to get pregnant, you have to know when your fertile window is, that is, those six days of the month where you really have chances of getting pregnant. For this, you need to know when ovulation occurs, that is, the moment your ovary releases a mature egg ready to be fertilised. Ovulation happens on the day 14 of your menstrual cycle if you have a regular cycle of 28 days.

If your cycle is shorter or longer than 28 days, you can use CaptainMums’ Ovulation Calculator to find out the exact day when you’re ovulating. If your cycle isn’t regular, you will find that getting pregnant is more challenging. You can keep reading for some extra tips to get pregnant with irregular periods.

Tips for getting pregnant: A healthy life

4. Watch your diet

Try to eat healthy -  and this one applies to your partner as well! Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, and make sure you’re getting enough protein. Besides, it’s even better if you eat organic foods that are free from pesticides. There are some foods that can help conceive as well, such as those containing slow-burning carbs (whole wheat) and monounsaturated fats (olive oil, nuts).

5. Exercise regularly

Sedentary life is not friends with fertility, so try to exercise regularly. Find a sport or an activity that you like to make sure you keep on doing it. It doesn’t matter what you choose, the important thing is to move!

6. Find your ideal weight

Another of the main tips for getting pregnant is finding your ideal weight. Being overweight or underweight can decrease your fertility – your body needs to be at its best to manage the great changes that are about to happen!

7. Bye bye, cigarette!

Your going to have to do it anyway – so why not start now? Say goodbye to tobacco, alcohol and other drugs and start treating your body right. Smoking can not only harm your baby, but can also affect your fertility, so try to avoid places with a lot of smoke in them as well.

If you need to indulge a little, some experts say it’s enough to keep alcohol units down to two instead of quitting completely (of course, you will have to cut it to 0 once you conceive). However, other experts say it’s better to quit altogether.

8. Pay a visit to your doctor

As you’ve seen before, you’ll have better chances of getting pregnant if your body is in the right shape, so finding out can’t hurt, right? Going to the doctor is another one of the top getting pregnant tips. You can start trying while you wait for your visit, where your doctor will ask questions about family history and in some cases even do some genetic research to find out if you and your partner are compatible or if either of you carries a genetic disease. You will only need to do a blood and a saliva test.

9. Consider taking folic acid

A folid acic supplement is a must in the tips for getting pregnant, since if taken during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, it reduces the baby’s risk of suffering conditions such as spina bifida. Of course, you need to talk to your doctor so he or she can prescribe the supplement, but you will probably have to take a 400mcg supplement a day. If you suffer from celiac disease or diabetes, the amount will be probably increased to 5mg.

10. Check out that sperm!

Your partner getting sperm tests is something to leave for later if you’re not able to conceive, but you can already start taking some precautions to keep it healthy. This is what he can do:

  • Say no to cigarettes and drugs: Yes, and not just out of solidarity with you! Tobacco and drugs can affect the quantity and quality of the sperm produced.
  • Less alcohol: Alcoholic beverages can reduce the amount of sperm and testosterone, and increase the amount of abnormal sperm.
  • He can also make sure he’s getting enough folic acid, zinc, calcium and vitamins C and D, all key in producing healthy sperm.
  • Avoid saunas and jacuzzis, since the heat kills the sperm.

With this useful tips for getting pregnant, you will increase your chances of conceiving. If you don’t manage to get pregnant within a year, it will be time to get help and start looking into the possibility of there being a problem. Don’t stress over it though: keep healthy, follow these tips and be patient. Good luck!

Hi!! I have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes during my pregnancy period. My OB/GYN said it is common to have this as the placenta makes hormones that can lead to sugar in the blood. He also said that after delivery I won't have diabetes. It's been 1.5 years after delivery and I thought of undergoing mommy makeover surgery from a clinic in...

Is it safe to undergo laser hair removal during breastfeeding? My brother's marriage is on June 11, 2017, and I want to look the best. I hate hair on my arms, legs, and face. During pregnancy, I did not undergo this procedure as I was told not to do it by my OB/GYN. I shaved during that time. I don't want to do it again. I'm planning to consult a...
